4. Rydon Community College Volcano Project:
Year 8 pupils have been displaying their volcano models and perfecting their presentation skills at the culmination of the ‘Tectonic Hazards’ topic in Geography. Some even managed to produce exciting working models, simulating gas and lava eruptions. Pupils have looked at recent earthquakes in Turkey, New Zealand and Japan, produced their own newspaper articles, as well as participating in a crisis management role play, based on the Montserrat eruption. 13. Swaziland:
Bordered by Mozambique and South Africa, Swaziland is merely a blot on the map but besides wildlife and exquisite craft, its colourful traditions are worth a detour. At the heart of it all is a near-absolute monarchy headed by Mswati III and the Queen Mother. In Swazi polygamous tradition, the heir to the throne is not the oldest son but the son of ‘the Great Wife’, chosen for her good character and family stock, and they rule together. 31. Slugs and Snails:
This is the time of year when you’re likely to start to notice the presence of slugs and snails in your garden, greenhouse, coldframe, window box .... indeed just about everywhere. The garden snail, Helix aspersa is generally the most troublesome but may also be joined by various species of the banded snail, Cepaea. Turn to page 31 to read more.
36. Vanillekipferl:
These little biscuits make lovely home-made gifts for family and friends at Easter. Just pop some in cellophane bags and tie with yellow ribbon. Try dipping some in different flavours of chocolate or drizzling white chocolate over the top. If you have children at home shaping the biscuits is a fun job for little hands! Turn to page 36 to read the recipe.
Flowersare all about as the warmer April days march on and minds turn to gardens. Slugs & snails will surely try your patience - turn to p31 for some answers.
