As the grey winter skies are replaced with an uplifting blue, the gardens come back to life and the days grow longer, Spring often helps us to feel happier.
Happiness can be defined as a state of mind in which our thinking is pleasant at least for a good portion of the time.
Ghandi said: Happiness is when what you think, what you say and what you do are in harmony.
What makes us happy tends to shift as people age. Younger people are more likely to associate happiness with excitement. Older folk are more likely to associate it with feeling peaceful.
Whatever your age, here are some tips for boosting happiness:
Stay healthy - eat sensibly. Mood enhancing foods such as (freshly-shelled) brazil nuts. Just 1-2 brazils a day increase selenium levels, which is believed to have all-round health benefits and help combat depression – other good options include broccoli, milk and eggs – read more at: http://www.virginactive.co.uk/content/wellness/crunch.aspx
Exercise regularly (can be free), as it raises endorphins and makes you feel better.
Laughter is the best medicine and it’s good for the brain as well!
Share your special moments.
Happiness held is a seed. Happiness shared is the flower. Unknown
Pursue hobbies and interests - an equally effective way of finding contentment.
Working on long term goals is a sure fire way to find joy and satisfaction.
Helping others - family, friends, neighbours, colleagues or volunteering – doing those little helpful things. To help you find happiness – give happiness.
The month of April looks set to have its fair share of happy events, with St George’s Day on April 23, which can be celebrated with a special Afternoon Tea – quintessentially English, a custom that was started by the Duchess of Bedford in the 19th Century. Alternatively, indulge in some traditional cider and a tasty ploughman’s lunch. Hot on its heels is the happiest of events, the Royal Wedding, on April 29 plus an extra Bank Holiday. If you are feeling community spirited, organise a street party or event. Visit www.worthing.gov.uk for more information.
