Sussex and Hong Kong upbringing creates charming ‘Mishmash’ of East and West on the web

November 2010: Stephanie Spurrier, who attended Cottesmore School near Crawley and whose parents live in Billingshurst, has launched House & Table, a new on-line company that may well become a ‘must see’ for designers and cost-conscious home makers across the country.

House & Table offers European rustic chic interior and decorative items from Europe – currently UK, France and Hungry – plus a touch the Oriental, at sensible prices.  Most of Stephanie’s pieces, large and small, have a rustic character that comes only with time.

Her range is constantly changing as Stephanie sources each piece personally. A red, hand-decorated hall bench with spindles set into the back, for example, is from Hungry, and would be a talking point in anyone’s home, especially at under £1,000.

And an unusual one meter-square kitchen table with painted frame and legs that features on her home page  would bring the nostalgia of a last-century European farmhouse right into your household - for less than £500.

Smaller table items in her opening collection include interesting new pickle jars with wavy tops, a pair of imperfect, but charming, Flemish chewing tobacco spittoons in cast iron and turquoise enamel, and a silver-plate muffin dish that looks for all the world like an old sweet shop counter bell. Two ceramic lamps from Morocco add to her coverage.

Stephanie was born in Hong Kong and brought up in Asia and in  Sussex so it is no surprise that her taste includes things Oriental. An old wooden horse from India with traces of gold leaf, a set of lacquered rice bowls from Vietnam, and several painted Ming chairs punctuate the website.

She said, “I created House & Table because friends kept asking me to source special things for them. It seemed that they liked and trusted my taste. Then, when I bought my own worker’s cottage, I couldn’t find a range of items from all over the world in one place. And finally, I realised that a lot of people don’t have the time, or don’t like to search high and low for those special things. I love it!”

Stephanie holds a degree in Surface Design and Textiles.
