Priory Art Group

StorringtonWhere in Storrington might you find a garden, a pond, some flowers, a dog, some chimpanzees, a mountain, Frank Sinatra, a Malaysian market ...? These are just some of the many subjects that members of the Priory Art Group have been painting recently.  Add to this some welcoming faces, and conversation over a cup of coffee, and you have the formula for this very friendly group of artists, who meet every Thursday morning in the Hall at Our Lady of England Priory in Monastery Lane, Storrington.

The art group started out in 2002, in Pulborough. Initially subsidised by Horsham District Council, it was set up by Pierre d’Angelo, a local artist and former Professor of Art at Budapest University. From an original membership of four it grew in popularity and, when Horsham District Council withdrew its subsidy in 2004, the group moved to Storrington, becoming the Priory Art Group.  Widening membership to include all ages and abilities, the original artists were joined by residents from the Storrington area, with Pierre continuing in the role of tutor. Six years on, the group continues to flourish.

The weekly meetings have a relaxed yet hard-working atmosphere. Members work on individual topics of their own choosing, with guidance from Pierre and encouragement from fellow group members. They use a wide variety of media (e.g. watercolour, acrylics, oils, pastels, pencils) and many members have been inspired by others to try new techniques.

One of the social highlights of the year is the Christmas lunch. Last Christmas 21 members enjoyed an excellent festive lunch party at the Crown Inn in Cootham.

An annual exhibition and sale of paintings takes place at Pulborough Garden Centre, and last summer the group had a stand at the Storrington Village Day. Members have also exhibited and sold paintings at various charity events in the area.

The next exhibition at Pulborough Garden Centre (Stopham Bridge, Pulborough) is throughout the Bank Holiday weekend - from Saturday 1st May to Tuesday 4th May. It is hoped that local residents will come along and support their neighbourhood art group.

There has been a steady stream of new members over the years; some are experienced artists but the majority arrive with some trepidation. For many, painting is a leisure activity that they are either returning to after many years or embarking on as a new hobby.  It doesn’t take long for the group’s warm welcome and enthusiasm, and Pierre’s one-to-one tuition, to give newcomers confidence.

There are a few vacancies for new members. The group meets every Thursday from 9.30 a.m. to 12 noon. For further information about membership please contact Jan Maunder (01903 742237).
