Sandgate Conservation Society - Sandgate Woods.

Glen & GeoffreySandgate Woods is a little known area and is quite a gem in our countryside that has many hidden features.

Apart from the wildlife that includes most of the English reptiles such as grass snakes, adders and lizards etc. there is also an abundance of flora with the bluebells just about to put on a show that promises to be quite special as they have been held back by the cold weather.

The wild daffodils are just going over and at present the primroses are in full bloom. During the summer months there are many wild flowers to be seen such as foxgloves, ragged robin, red champion and many others that I cannot pronounce let alone know their Latin names. Anyone into fungi will find a good range on show in the autumn.

The area includes a series of ponds together with a small lake and a ‘hidden meadow’ that takes a bit of finding. I suspect that the meadow was created many years ago by the top-soil that was removed when they initially started sand winning and since then has never seen the sight of a plough, hence all manner of wild plants on show.

The photo of Geoffrey Moore and Glenn Donnelly was taken at our recent AGM, where Glenn was presented with a bouquet of flowers as a token of the ‘Society’s appreciation of the work she has carried out in the past eight years as the Membership Secretary.

The CD contains both the ‘people’ photographs together with a number of pictures that I have taken in Sandgate Woods.

Anyone wishing to become involved with the ‘Society should contact Geoffrey Moore on 01903-744881, who will no doubt give the directions to the ‘hidden meadow’.

Once again Melanie, many thanks for your continued support, it is greatly appreciated.
