Storrington Conservation Society Owl Box Project

Barn OwlStorrington Conservation Society’s special project this winter is installing owl boxes at various locations around the village. The number of breeding pairs of owls is in decline and this is giving bird experts considerable cause for concern.

The Conservation Society wants to do its bit to help address this decline by having tawny owl and barn owl boxes specially made ready to go up later this winter. The society would like local residents to help nominate sites for the boxes.

Mick Denness, the Society’s Chairman, said, ”We really do want to enlist the help of local residents to help make this project a real success. We want to site the boxes in locations where people regularly hear or see owl activity. We need to locate our tawny owl boxes in broad-leaved woodland / parkland areas, whilst the barn owl boxes need to be sited on farmland, on the edge of woodland or in open countryside. (The owls need large areas of rough, uncultivated land as this is the habitat where they hunt their prey.)

“It would also be helpful if the people nominating an area either owned it themselves or knew that the landowner was willing to have the boxes installed. Residents are also very welcome to make a donation towards the costs of the owl boxes or helping to put them up.” Mick added.

Possible sites can be nominated by email to:

storringtonconservation@hotmail.co.uk
or by telephone on 01903 745971.

Final selection will be carried out by owl expert Dave Short from Aylesbury Barn Owl Project. Dave will also be giving a public talk about barn owls on Feb. 25th at 2:00pm at Storrington Village Hall. Entry costs £1 including refreshments.
