Storrington Sizzles with Fun

There were no ‘Summertime Blues’ at Storrington Village Day as the afternoon burst into hot sunshine after a dull wet start to the morning.

The annual Storrington Village Day held on Saturday 25th June, proved to be a huge success according to the organisers, a collaboration of the Storrington Rotary, Round Table, and Lions Clubs.

This year’s Village Day Chairman, Tony Vaughan, confirmed that the event had drawn record crowds and more attractions to Storrington Recreation Ground, for a day of fun and entertainment.

A full programme of arena events included a medieval re-enactment, a children’s dance display by The Sandra Wilson School of Dance and Performing Arts, a music interlude by local band ‘Fixed Wheel’ and a performance of Zumba by members of the Chanctonbury Sports and Leisure Centre.

Another lead attraction was a Classic Vehicle concourse. Over 120 classic vehicles processed to the ground and were then put on display by their enthusiastic owners, predominantly members of SADCASE (Storrington and District Classic and Sportscar Enthusiasts). Towards the end of the afternoon selected vehicles were paraded around the arena, whilst their background and history were described to the onlookers.

The many other attractions included a Funfair, Craft and Society stalls, traditional games such as Skittles and Hoopla, as well as a wide range of trade stalls.

“One of the objectives behind this event is to give an opportunity for a large number of local charities and societies to promote their causes against an overall background of entertainment; and to undertake some fundraising, as well as to attract new members”, added Tony. “Wherever you looked, the obvious enjoyment shared by members of the community of all ages was only too apparent.

”To further encourage the public to spend their money there was a Giant Book Fair and Grand Raffle, together with Tombola, Bric-a-Brac, and bottle stalls.

Much needed refreshment (and shade) was provided by Tea and Beer tents, a BBQ and ice creams.

The Musical Evening featured local group ‘No Pressure’, who played to the crowds seated on the grass throughout an idyllic English summers evening.

Tony thanked everyone for their support, including sponsors Waitrose, Tesco and Fowlers Estate Agents plus many of the village businesses, shops and restaurants for the numerous raffle prizes; Storrington Parish Council for their valuable assistance and SADCASE members for the Classic vehicles display. He also expressed gratitude to the Round Table, Lions and Rotary work force, without whom the event would be impossible.

As well as providing the Village with a day to remember, the organisers are hoping that in excess of £3,000 will have been raised on the day which will be used to support local charitable causes.
