Storrington Squash Club pulls back from the brink!

At the recent AGM members learnt that following it’s closure last summer, the club had been pulled around by a committee lead by Mike Corby – the former Olympian and Chairman of England Squash and Rackets Association. Mike said: “The club was reopened just a week after it’s closure thanks to some fancy footwork by a committee mainly comprised of members who were responsible for building the club some 30 years ago.” He thanked them for coming forward to help and fully accepted that not all wished to continue, but how delighted he was that four active players had volunteered to join the committee.

In appreciation of his leadership a motion was proposed and carried that Mike should become club president – a position to which he agreed.

It was reported that since July membership had more than doubled (it now stood at 146), two teams had been active in the Sussex leagues since September and various social events such as Quiz nights had been put in place.

However Mike Corby, who used to own a chain of leisure centres, stressed that whilst social events were an important part of any club, at the end of the day membership by active people was what it was all about, and he strongly urged each and every member to redouble their effort to introduce a new member and the committee would focus upon attracting corporate memberships
