Storrington Table Tennis Club – Division 4 Champions!
As if the pressure of just thinking about another penalty shoot out wasn’t enough as we approach the World Cup, or the anticipation of the first British Wimbledon champion in over 70 years, another less well known competition had all involved in an equally nail biting state!
In only their first year in the Worthing and District Table Tennis League, Storrington Table Tennis Club have won the Division 4 title after a hard fought season and exciting play off final. The Club entered a team of three juniors and two adults into the competition in October who then played the other seven teams in the division three times throughout the year. Storrington’s home games were played at Chanctonbury Sports and Leisure with their team philosophy to have the adults play the away matches and the juniors the home games, so as not to have the juniors up to late on a school night! The aim was also to give the juniors the opportunity to gain more experience and play more competitive games. This certainly was the outcome, with all the juniors improving dramatically over the season with one moving his averaging from 17% for the first half of the season, to a brilliant 43% for the second half.
As the season came to an end Storrington and West Worthing B were tied on points at the top of the division, so it came down to a play off in early May to decide the winners. West Worthing had the best player in the division with a 98% average, but Storrington had the only player that had beaten him – so it was going to be close! In the end it was – with Storrington edging out West Worthing and landing their first silverware and were well deserved Division 4 champions!
Storrington Table Tennis Club is now going from strength to strength, with a hope to include two teams in the league next year and build on its successful first season. The Club’s adult section started just last year and runs on a Monday night 8:30–10pm, with the junior section from 5-7pm on a Thursday, both at Chanctonbury Sports and Leisure. Anyone interested in playing at whatever age and with any level of experience, can either drop in on the Club nights or contact Ian Talmadge (01903 745095).
Congratulations to the team: Ian Luxford, Joe Beer and Ian Talmadge (pictured l-r with the trophy),plus Pat Manoharan and Oliver Salkeld.
