Summer Plant Sale in Aid of the Mary How Trust
“If you would be happy all your life, plant a garden”. So says the traditional Chinese proverb, and shoppers took a leaf out of the proverb book and flocked to the Mary How Trust plant sale on Saturday 22 May.
Held in the grounds of Horsham’s Unitarian Church, the sale offered an abundance of plants to suit all gardens. From glorious hellebores and white scented jasmine, to delightful assorted annuals and delicious tomatoes and runner beans, the array of plants was remarkable, and appealed to expert as well as novice gardeners.
The plants were all donated by green-fingered supporters of the Mary How Trust. The event’s organiser, Suzanne Charles, of Sanctuary Lane, Storrington, spent months growing more than 500 plants to donate to the sale. “I’m a big supporter of the Mary How Trust, and I’m a very keen gardener, so a plant sale seemed the perfect way to raise funds for their amazing work”, explained Suzanne. “I’m very grateful for all the support I’ve received from friends and fellow gardening enthusiasts.”
The plant sale raised nearly £500 for the Mary How Trust’s health screening service, which aims to spot the early signs of serious illnesses such as bowel cancer, diabetes, prostate cancer and abdominal aortic aneurysm.
On behalf of the Mary How Trust, Roanne Moore-Loizides thanked those who had donated plants to the sale. Commenting on the strength of support received from the local community for this event, Roanne thanked sponsors B&Q Worthing, Wyevale Pulborough, and Shoots Garden Centre for their donation of compost; as well as the Storrington Horticultural Society for donating several hundred plant pots, and the Horsham Unitarian Church for their support and hospitality.
The Mary How Trust will have a plant stall at Parham’s Garden Weekend on 10 and 11 July.
