The Zsambek Project - A charity supported by our front cover artist!

Fiona ReidyZsambek is a small town/village, which gives its name to a group of similar, smaller villages, in an intensely deprived area of Hungary, 30 km from Budapest, just off the main highway from Budapest to Vienna.

The area was largely unproductive throughout almost 50 years of communism.  This has resulted in physical, mental and spiritual deprivation for its people – agonisingly slow to heal.

The Zsambek Project supports the men and women who, through close contact and regular visits, are devoting their lives to helping individuals and families.

In the past 10/12 years, the charity has contributed financially to the building and staffing of a Vocational Trade School for 350 young people aged 15 years and upwards, to ensure employment.

It has also provided a Day Care Centre for 5-14 year-olds, equipped and staffed a facility for training physically and light mentally handicapped adults and ensured that those in most need have food, light, heat and other basic needs.

Helping in these ways, the Project feels privileged to see the gradual healing of past hurts, the returning sense of self-worth, a pride in small achievements, a greater sense of community and an emergence of individual, personal gifts that, until now, have lain dormant.
