Trinity Methodist Church 50th Anniversary

Methodist Church StorringtonThe Methodist Church in Storrington, on Thakeham Road, is celebrating 50 years of Methodist presence in the village.

The Methodist Church began in 1960 like this:

Mrs Thornton, who, with her husband retired to Storrington the story goes by sticking a pin in a map. A chance meeting at Greenfield’s in the Square, over the bacon counter, made her aware of other Methodists in the village, and the idea of forming a Storrington “society” was formed. That “society” began on the 7th October 1960, in the Thornton’s house, Deynecourt in Greyfriars Lane.

There were 11 there. And from there the vision grew, regular meetings began, and planning for a long term future began. The booking of a hall followed and regular monthly meetings, and a church building came later – and that is another Anniversary in a few years time.

We have held various celebrations throughout 2010 including a prayer labyrinth at Easter; a 1960’s evening with David Jacobs, and return visits from previous serving ministers.

We would like to invite everyone to join us over the weekend of 24th and 25th September as we celebrate further with a Flower and Craft Festival, and exhibition of memories.

The church will be open on the Saturday between 10am and 5pm; and on Sunday between 2pm and 5pm. On the Sunday evening, we shall end the weekend with a Songs of Praise shared with our Methodist District Chair, the Rev John Hellyer. Refreshments will be available throughout the weekend and we look forward to seeing many friends.

Our next 50 years will begin with the launch of Trinity centre, a new look suite of premises both for our own usage as a church, but also to share with our community a lot more.

A lot of people have been blessed by the Methodist cause in Storrington since 1960, and we look forward in the years ahead to serving and sharing with many more.

Ian Pruden
Methodist Minister for Storrington
