Village Day Reaches New Heights
The annual Storrington Village Day held on Saturday 26th June, was deemed to be “the best yet”, according to the organisers, a collaboration of the Storrington Rotary, Round Table, and Lions Clubs.
Village Day Chairman, Ken Collins, confirmed that the event had drawn record crowds and more attractions to Storrington Recreation Ground, for a day of fun and entertainment in the glorious sunshine.
A full programme of arena events included, Medieval re-enactment, a Dog Obedience session. a Dance display by Pupils from Storrington First School, Belly Dancing, and a display from the Southcoast Zodiacs Cheerleaders, who had just returned from an international competition, in which they had gained 1st place.
The crowds were also entertained with music from The Littlehampton Academy Steel Band and the Petworth Town Band.
Over 45 classic vehicles, led by the Amberley Museum Fire Engine processed to the ground and were then put on display by their enthusiastic owners, who are mainly members of SADCASE (Storrington and District Classic and Sportscar Enthusiasts).
Towards the end of the afternoon the vehicles were paraded around the arena, whilst their background and history were described to the onlookers.
The many other attractions included a Funfair, Craft and Society stalls, traditional games such as Skittles and Hoopla, as well as a wide range of trade stalls.
Rotary President, Tony Vaughan, said that one of the objectives behind this event is to give a valuable opportunity for a large number of local charities and societies to promote their causes and to undertake some fundraising, as well as to attract new members. Tony confirmed that he was proud of the success with this.
To further encourage the public to spend their money there was a Grand Raffle, together with Tombola, Bric-a-Brac, Book, and bottle stalls.
Much needed refreshment (and shade) was provided by Tea and Beer tents, a BBQ and ice creams.
The Musical Evening featured 3 local groups, No Pressure, Rock of Ages, and the headline entertainment by the The Gangsters.
To round off the evening 3 Hot Air balloons were inflated and took off from the field, providing a spectacular sight. A special raffle had been organised, with the winner receiving a flight in one of the Balloons sponsored by Stable Antiques of Storrington
Ken Collins thanked everyone for their support, including Waitrose, many of the Village businesses, shops and restaurants for the numerous Raffle prizes, Storrington Parish Council for their valuable assistance, and members of SADCASE for organising the Classic vehicles
As well as providing the Village with a day to remember, the organisers are hoping that in excess of £3,000 will have been raised on the day, and this will be used to support local charities and charitable causes.
Following this success, next year’s event is already being planned, including Hot Air Balloons, for Saturday 25th June 2011, a date for your diaries.
