West Sussex County Times Community Awards

The recent inaugural West Sussex County Times Community Awards campaign proved to be a huge success.  The glittering awards ceremony (“a bit like the Oscars really”) took place at The Capitol in Horsham on 1st October and was a thoroughly memorable event.

Held in association with Horsham district council, a great variety of people and organisations in 14 different categories from right across the Horsham district were recognised and applauded by more than 300 people.

The local highlight of the evening was, of course, the Storrington Minibus Association taking home the Best Community Service prize. Not only was it a moving accolade to have all the hard work and dedication of the people involved recognised but it also proved a fantastic last minute addition to the wonderful schedule of visits and shopping missions it provides to many in the Storrington area.

The Storrington Minibus Association provides transport for people and organisations in need.  The scheme is run by volunteers and they are always looking for more. All their services are door to door and each bus has an escort.  If you would like to become a member and have access to this valuable service or, if you would like to get involved as a volunteer, please call Rodger Hunt on (01903) 743954.

The Ashington Cougars were also runners up in “Sports Team of the Year” category.  The club was one of many sports clubs from the Horsham District to be put forward for the award. The nomination applauded the club for providing structured training and great club atmosphere for village youngsters as well as focusing on the fact that the club is run entirely by volunteers and has just celebrated its 10th year.

The warm atmosphere of the awards was aided by appropriately themed music for each prize, with school teachers making their approach to the stage humming ‘I’d like to teach the world to sing’, playgroup leaders bouncing up to ‘Sesame Street’, and this year’s Best Friend having ‘Thank you for being a friend’ by Andrew Gold to accompany them.

Throughout the night sponsors spoke of their pride in being associated with the Community Awards, before presenting the many winners with trophies and certificates.

The evening finished with a heartfelt note of appreciation by Gary Shipton to those who had made the event possible, especially partners Horsham district council, and the Capitol itself, as well as County Times staff Patricia Slatter and Theo Cronin.

The West Sussex County Times Community Awards will be repeated next year, but perhaps by editorial decree, not on October 1 this time!
