West Sussex Junior Wildlife Club Wins National Award!

The children’s club at RSPB Pulborough Brooks has won the ‘Wildlife Explorers club of the year 2010’ award, based on their eye-catching yearbook they compiled of all the outdoor nature activities they have undertaken.

They beat off over 100 other clubs around the country to the title, and on Saturday 4 June, the Leader of West Sussex County Council, Louise Goldsmith, will present them with their awards.

Dianne Allcock, volunteer leader of the group said: “The kids are thrilled to have won - they worked so hard on their entry. We have a wonderful time here each month, getting out and about discovering all the wonderful things out there in the natural world, and I think their enthusiasm must have shone through.”

The judges said that their yearbook was exceptional, full of photos, and clearly showed that the children thoroughly enjoyed what they were doing.

Louise Goldsmith said, “Ensuring that the next generation has the chance to get out and be inspired by nature is vital. I’m delighted to see a group in West Sussex leading the way, and it was great to present them with their prizes and see all the things they get up to.”

Tim Callaway, RSPB Area Manager, who was instrumental in setting up the group in 1994 said: “This is the third time the Pulborough Brooks’ Wildlife Explorers club has won the charity’s award, which is a huge achievement. It reflects the enthusiasm and energy of the children, and of all the volunteer leaders.”

The Wildlife Explorers is the junior membership of the RSPB, and has over 200,000 members around the UK. Children receive magazines four times a year, free entry to RSPB nature reserves, and the chance to join Wildlife Explorers clubs, which include many based in schools.
